Hi! My name’s Ikra Javed, and I’m a historian and Valentine’s Day enthusiast. I really love the holiday, and it has to be one of the most underrated holidays. Oh, how many friends I know how hate the holiday or are indifferent, to say the least. Since I couldn’t share my joy with them, I figured I could bring the joy here onto the web for myself and others to learn more. I decided to make a website dedicated to exploring the history of the holiday, its contemporary adaptations and meaning for Americans, and its darker imprint of commercial colonialism. My attempt to is capture the various faces the holiday encompasses, stretching from the medieval period to the post modern, and from the West to the East. You can tweet me @Ikrathinks if you’re looking to reach me.
This website is a work of Digital Humanities, an emerging field that seeks to bring the work of Humanities and scholarship actively onto the web. This project began in February 2019 for an English class at Davidson College and where it will end…..remains to be discovered.
